Clinical Practice
Clinical Practice Requirement
As part of the Sleep Technology Essentials – 80-Hour Certificate Program, students are required to complete 20 hours of supervised clinical practice in a sleep laboratory setting.

The purpose of clinical practice is to provide hands-on exposure to standard sleep lab operations, patient care, and foundational technical skills under qualified supervision. Clinical hours are completed during the course and are designed to be flexible and accessible for both students and participating labs.
Where Clinical Practice Can Be Completed?
Students may complete their clinical practice hours at one of the following:
Option 1: NIHT Clinical Site
National Sleep Solutions
Columbus, Georgia

Option 2: Local Accredited Sleep Lab
Students may complete clinical practice at an accredited sleep lab in their home state under the supervision of a qualified technologist or provider.

For local clinical experiences, NIHT simply confirms that the site is an accredited sleep lab and that appropriate supervision is in place.
No formal affiliation or long-term commitment is required.

What Students Will Do During Clinical Practice?
Clinical practice provides supervised exposure to core sleep lab activities, which may include:
-
Patient intake and professional communication
-
Electrode site identification and application (10–20 system)
-
Equipment setup and basic calibration
-
Monitoring signals and identifying artifacts
-
Basic troubleshooting
-
Observation or exposure to PAP therapy (CPAP/BiPAP)
-
Infection control and patient safety procedures
-
Professional conduct in the clinical environment
Students are not functioning as independent technologists. The experience is observational and skills-based, appropriate for entry-level education.
How the Clinical Practice Process Works?
Step 1: Select Your Clinical Location

All students begin by completing the Clinical Placement Selection Form to indicate where they plan to complete their clinical hours.

Step 2 (If Completing Hours Locally): Confirm Clinical Site

Students completing clinical hours at a local sleep lab complete a brief Clinical Site Request Form so NIHT can confirm site and supervisor information.

This step is a simple confirmation and helps ensure proper documentation.
Step 3: Clinical Site Participation Agreement

If the student is completing clinical training at an external sleep laboratory, the clinical facility may review and sign the Clinical Site Participation Agreement.

This document outlines the general understanding for student participation in clinical observation and training activities.

The agreement confirms that:
• Students are responsible for meeting all clinical site requirements
• Students maintain their own liability coverage if required by the facility
• The clinical site maintains supervision and control of patient care
Students participating in Clinical Training at external facilities are supervised by the clinical site and do not provide services on behalf of the National Institute for Health Technology.
Clinical sites may download and return the signed agreement to:

Step 4: Complete Clinical Hours
Once the course is underway, students complete 20 supervised clinical hours on a schedule that works for both the student and the lab.

Step 5: Verify Completion
At the conclusion of clinical practice, the clinical supervisor completes the Clinical Skills Checklist & Hour Verification electronically.

No printing or mailing is required.
Important Notes for Students

-
Clinical hours are completed during the course, not before it begins
-
Clinical hours must be completed before access to the final exam
-
All clinical forms are completed and stored online
-
Students should not begin clinical hours until the appropriate steps above are completed
Professional Liability Insurance (If Required by Your Clinical Site)
Some sleep laboratories may require students to carry individual professional liability insurance before participating in clinical observation or training.
If your clinical site requires this coverage, students may obtain an individual policy through providers that offer coverage for allied health students.
Common providers used by healthcare students include:

• Healthcare Providers Service Organization (HPSO)
• CM&F Group
• Proliability (Mercer)
Student policies are generally very affordable, typically costing between $35 and $60 per year, depending on the provider and coverage limits.
Students should confirm any insurance requirements directly with their clinical site before beginning clinical hours.
Information for Sleep Labs & Clinical Supervisors
Thank you for supporting the education of future sleep technologists.
Students completing clinical practice through the National Institute for Health Technology (NIHT) are enrolled in a BRPT-approved Focus 2 (F2017) educational program. Clinical practice is limited to 20 supervised hours and focuses on foundational exposure and skill development.
Students participating in clinical observation are supervised by the clinical facility and do not provide services on behalf of the National Institute for Health Technology.

Supervisors are asked only to:
-
Provide supervision during scheduled hours
-
Complete a brief skills checklist and hour verification at the end of the experience
No contracts, long-term commitments, or additional reporting are required.
